CHAVA, Hawksworth, Ceylon, RAF

I am trying to find any relations of my father Royce Douglas hawks worth Chava ,I don't know if this is the correct surname. Roy married Jean Deakin and had 1 child Margaret Jean . His father was Richard t Chava and mother Ann Mary Hawksworth. . I believe he was the younger son. He moved to Australia and lived in Tocumwal N S W. The only information I have is that my father was born  on 22/2/1909 in Kandy Ceylon to Richard T Chava? and  Ann Mary Hawksworth. He was the younger son, so I believe he had other brothers. He left Ceylon at about the age of 19 to go to Uk .We have found a record of him being in the RAF in 1925, maybe. He told me that he went to a private school in Kandy. O'NEAL

Gangapur

I hope someone can help me please. I am trying to get a copy of my mother’s birth/baptism certificate. Patricia Valencia O’Neal was born in born Gangapur City in Aug 1926/27. She was from an English/Irish/Catholic family. I have tried getting information from various family history web sites, embassies, British Library Asian & African Studies section, etc with no luck. It was suggested that I “.....write to the ecclesiastical authorities requesting them to send a copy of her entry to the British Library, on receipt of which we can formally enter it in our records and issue you with a certified copy. Gangapur is unlikely to have more than one Catholic church......”. Trouble is I don’t know who to write to and if there was more than one church in the area. Can anyone give me some advice or point me in the right direction pls – who to contact, contact details, etc? My email is supanova03@optusnet.com.au

DRUMMOND / BURGE

Simla

Hi, My great Uncle, Cecil Burge, married an Ethel Irene Drummond on 17 Apr 1922 in Simla.  Ethel was born in Jhelum, Bengal, 11 April 1885 to William Adolphus Wallis Drummond and a Catherine Camilla (Her mother's family name I do not know).  It was family rumour that Ethel was Indian and when she and Cecil visited England her presence caused quite a stir in the village.  Being from a fairly ignorant English West Country background it is quite possible that the family presumed she was Indian and did not explore the possibility that Ethel's mother, Catherine Camilla, was either Indian or half Indian and her Father a British soldier or civil servant.  Cecil went on to become the Secretary at Lawrence school, Sanawar during the 1930's.  The passenger log of the "Viceroy of India" travelling from London to Bombay in 1935 shows a Cecil Burge and an Ethel Burge, so she was still alive then but died sometime between then and Cecil leaving India at the end of 1949.   I can't find a death certificate for her.  If anyone can shed some light on any of this I'd be very grateful, regards, James.jamesgrindon@yahoo.co.uk

MARTIN

Railway Employee

Calcutta

My father Dhaneswar Mukherjee was an E. Railway employee and was posted as Goods clerk in Asansol nearly 50 years ago during the early sixties of the last century. We used to stay in Traffic Quarters (Qtr No.MN 214) very close to Children's Park, now a desolate place and in dilapidated condition. I would like to share my fond memories of childhood days there. There was an Anglo-Indian family in Qtr No. 215 just opposite our block on the other side of the road leading to Old station. He was one Mr Martin as far as I can remember, and there were two ladies with him probably two sisters. Mr Martin worked in the then D.S. office (now DRM office). They used to play organ at home during Christmas and other religious occasions, and we peeped through their windows to find them praying before the portrait of Jesus Christ and Mother Mary. He was a man of short stature and a very upright man, very punctual in his attendance to duty at D.S. office. He used to walk all the way down to his office. tapankumar mukherjee <tapankumarmukherjee.burdwan@gmail.com>

O'CONNOR

Ajmer, St Joseph's Convent

Hello, I am looking for some information regarding my Grand Mother and Great Aunt. They were born to an Irish father, Michael O’Connor and an Anglo India Mother (who’s name we do not know) in Ajmer in 1923 and 1926. We know that they went to St Joseph’s Convent School in 1931-1934 before leaving for England with their father in early 1930. They didn’t have birth certificates, so I am looking for which hospital they were born in. It would also be useful to find anyone who remembers going to school with them during this time. Any information anyone has would be of great help. Sadly, my grandmother and great aunt have now passed away, so the search has become even harder! Many thanks Emily Barrett emily_grace87@hotmail.com

BRANDON / PHILLIPS

Hello, I am trying to discover any information about my great-grandfather Elmer Gladwin Brandon, who was an Indian Civil Servant. I have very little information about him. He may have been born in America, possibly circa 1860. He had one known son, Elmer Richard Brandon born in 1888, who was a Merchant Seaman, Mercantile Marine and married Elaine Phillips in Camberwell, London, England in 1916. The couple had three children, Cyril, Bernard and Stella. Elmer Richard Brandon appears to have disappeared from their lives in 1920. If anyone has any information I would be very grateful. Many thanks, Heather Smallcalluna@aol.com

Plunkett

Hi my name is Pat and I am trying to trace my fathers roots. his name was Reginald Noel Plunkett, he was born in Bangalore in1926. He had a twin brother Arthur and a sister Gwendoline Inez Plunkett who married Ralph Barne Austn {the Austin family tree is on the web] He also had a brother Frederick and younger brother James. His father was George Plunkett and mother Dorethea nee St Perseine His mother died in 1930 with another set of twins. I have no way of tracing records here in England because I cant get any information on anybody called Plunkett. I  would be extremely grateful if you could shed some light on my search or if you could give me some advice on how to continue it.. flemingpat@btinternet.com

GASS Family

Hi, I’ve been looking through your website and discover many people who were somehow linked/related/known/possibly connected to the Gass family .
The Gass family were resident at Coimbatore, Erode, Coonoor, Trichy, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, USA and UK with other sprinklings here and there.
The Gass Forest Museum at Coimbatore was founded by my GGFather Horace Archibald Gass and his son Sir Neville Archibald Gass was the founder of British Petroleum.
There are Gass’s all over the place but few family histories exist. I guess the Gass’ are a reclusive, academic, industrious lot with links to politicians, academics, business and research for well over 150 years. That is a family trait.
I’m looking for people in your network who may have connections to a Gass anywhere. Right now I am compiling the Family Tree and information would help
Thanks. Appreciate it, Marshall Gass, MA; M.Sc( ScEd); GDITE; Dip Tchg: MNZCS; ( PhD) gassm@delasalle.co.nz

HALL / REYNOLDS

JOHNSTON

Hi my name is Sandy Warman-Johnston.  I am searching for two Aunts who it is believed came to Australia in 1947 after independence.  I am told that they came with their father David Hall.  The confusing part is that sometimes they used the name Warman-Johnston, and at other times just JOHNSTON.  As far as I know David Hall left his wife Margaret nee Reynolds after over 25 years of marriage and twelve children, and took the two youngest, these two girls with him, and went to live in Bombay from Calcutta.  I think the two girls names were Irene who was born about 1922 and Rhoda born about 1923.  There is another Aunt Jean, who no one knows what happened to.  She married Walter Marshall and had two children named either Sylvia or Cynthia and Peter.  They did come to England after independence but disappeared and the family think they may have gone to Australia on the assisted passage scheme.  So if anyone can help with information or guidance please contact me by e-mail sandyofwitley@aol.com

WATSON , WILKINS  HENDERSON , RIGBY

Pallavaram

My grandfather, Arthur Watson, was of Anglo-Indian descent, born and raised in Pallavaram, Madras. He left India as a child in 1885, when his father left the army and returned to the UK. A cousin (another Kirk descendant) has traced the family history back to 1790 in India, via the female lines of descent. The women married English & Scottish soldiers, but I would imagine that the male descendants would have married into the Anglo-Indian community. If possible I would like to make contact with other descendants. From the information that is available from christenings & marriages, my family came from the area known as the Madras Presidency (Bangalore, Arcot, Pallavaram, Ooty) - other surnames include WILKINS, HENDERSON & RIGBY.  Lesley Watson lotus296@bigpond.com

Maxworth / McMahon

Fernandez

Bangalore

I have not been able to find ANY information on my Great Grandmother whose maiden name was Maxworth. She married a Michael Francis McMahon but later reverted back to her maiden name of Louisa May Maxworth.  She resided in Columbo, Ceylon for a time whilst under the name McMahon, and later moved to Bangalore, India where she married a Ruben Fernandez.  He changed his name to Maxworth.  She died in Bangalore around 1949 and I noticed that you had THE ONLY reference to the name Maxworth apparently anywhere in the world in your family tree.  If there is a connection of any kind or if you have uncovered her details by mistake, could you please advise me of this.  I cannot get a birth, death or marriage certificate for this lady and I know she existed.  Extremely frustrating as you can imagine.  If this request is not something which you would like to respond to, I fully understand.  I do appreciate your time in reading this request.  My email address in enclosed in case you may be able to help.  Thank you, Jenny Boyle, Australia. desmier1956@hotmail.com

Blackwell/

Bertenshaw

Hi, can anyone help in tracing my blackwell family. East India.  The only thing I know for certain is that my great great grandmother sarah blackwell was born in east india between 1839-1843 she married a james bertenshaw born 1836 in droylsden lancashire great britain, on the 1881british census he is classed has an army pensioner aged 45.  They did however have some children born in india.  elizabeth born in 1866 east indies,  james jnr born 1869 east indies and francis born 5.4.1872 east indies.  on the 1901 census it gives james's place of birth has bombay india.  I also know that there was a harriet who i presume would have been a blackwell originally but who at 23 was married to a john thomas byrom and on the 1881 census were living in droylsden lancashire england but harriet was too born in the west indies. Harriet and john thomas byrom had a sarah a bertenshaw living with them but we think it was a susannah bertenshaw who was our great grandmother.  She later married my great grandfather edward walker in 1900. ashton-under-lyne lancashire england.
I would love anyone to write to me if they have any info on my blackwell bertenshaw. sue.lees@virgin.net

St Peters School,

Mazagaon, Bombay

hello n greetings... to who ever is reading this .I frankly don't know where to start from but am gonna do my best n put this as simple as I can.My aunt (…nee Ms Roshan Dittia ) is an  ex- St Peters School, Mazagaon, Bombay (now Mumbai)... years were 1942 – 1946/7….. I am trying to trace or connect with anyone of her class mates or relatives too  -  if i can trace even ""one"" just one school friend for her......as we have always been hearing these wonderful stories of her fun filled mischievious classmates / friends - mainly British, Australian, & Anglo Indian girls n guys who studied in this school then with her and all the fun they had. Well my aunt is gonna be 75 yrs old so i decided to do something special - i want to give her a present of a lifetime. My aunt, my mom & their family they used to stay in the bungalow which was adjacent to the school compound ( if that helps) ...there was the school principals office and residence side, then the gym n church side , the main school side and then the fourth part of the compound was a wall with their house………the wall only dividing the compound n their house. I also know from her that majority of the students migrated and or returned to Britain, Australia, USA some settled in Canada…… this is tough esp since most of them must be in the same age bracket n I really don’t know how many maybe net savy - so i need to reach out to the next generation and or anyone  who knows someone who stayed in Bombay in n around that period n studied in this school or knows some families who migrated around the same time who have connections………..... some of the classmates I believe kept in touch for few years n then as we all know everyone drifted with lifes struggles and priorities took over each others lives…...  But I am not going to give up .... I will atleast try.... and try real hard with all the help I am going to get from all the wonderful people out there……. if there is any way or anyone who can help n guide me in achieving this feat – I wud be ever so grateful.  please do revert to me if u have any guidelines or any places u think i shud look into - i wud appreciate it. my personal email id is - snlmq@hotmail.com  thank you so much. - Nilo

Located after 49 yrs

It is with much joy and heartfelt thanks that I write this e-mail to you. The message reading looking for Margaret Williams in America has been such a tremendous success. It was come upon by the "Grace of God" by her very own son, and now after 49 years we have been reunited with our dearly loved cousin Margaret. Yes we last spoke to her in 1954, to say our goodbyes as she was migrating to the U.S.A.
Thank you and Enid once again for giving us opportunities such as this, not only, to find our Ancestors, but to also be able to find lost relatives and friends. Jennifer Thomas

LABROOY

Dear Sir, One of the grandmothers of one of my grandmothers was one of the children of Johannes Labrooy. Her name was Dirkje Labrooy. Dirkje, born 2 february 1794 in Monster in The Netherlands, was the youngest child of Johannes. She had one sister (Elisabeth,1781) and five brothers Pieter,1780; Hendrik Gabriël, 1783; Frank, 1784; Jan, 1786 and Frans, 1788. They all lived in Monster. The family of Johannes origanaly came from France (Valenciennes). His familytree begins with Druon La Broy born abt 1600 in Valenciennes. We can not find (exept Dirkje) any of the six other children of Johannes. It may be that they all went after 1799/1814 to other countries for polytical reasons. Our archives don´t give any information and nobody with the name Labrooy is still living in our country. If you could help me with any information about this family (many names in Australia with this name can be found on internet, but I couldn´t find one who was looking for his/her familytree), I would be very thankfull.  Greetings from Pieter Dubbelman.  I (born in 1927) am living in a small town Burgh-Haamstede in the Netherlands.   Pieter.Dubbelman@12move.nl

HOOD FAMILY         St. Joseph Convent, Kalimpong

My mother was born in Calcutta in 1920 to Marie C. Thurman Hood (daughter of Catherine O'Connor-Byrne and Edgar Moore Hood) and a Mr. Phillips (first name unknown).  Her mother had a second husband named Edgar Moore Hood.  My mother took Mr. Hood's name.  She has a half-sister Valentine Hood who lives in the U.S. and a half-brother named Edgar Thurman Hood who was adopted-out while he was still an infant.  Their mother Marie C. Thurman Hood died two weeks after giving birth to her son.  My mother and sister have no idea what happened to their brother.  The adoption was private and apparently there are no records.  My mother attend school near Darjeeling in Kalingpong at the convent school of St. Joseph D'Cluny.  We would love to find someone who might have known her family or have some idea what happened to her brother.  We can be reached at dlcpdt@earthlink.com.  I appreciate any assistance.  Priscilla Dunklee Trask, St. Louis, Missouri

Madras Civil Hospital (1926)

hi, i am janakie from sri lanka,50 years old and trying desperately to find my grandmother's relations who r anglo indians, My grandmother was a Cook and her maiden name was Evelyn. Evelyn married my grandfather, Gerald de Silva when he was in madras on duty and both of them came down to Sri lanka. But after the birth of my mother Barbara, she retuned back to India and never visited the island again. May be there are relations of hers in Madras still and i would appreciate if somebody could trace any one of them. My mother is in her mid seventies now and cant remember much details as she was only 2 years when all this happened. According to her my grandmother was a matron in a hospital in madras and she had met my GF whilst he was warded for treatment. i know i cant help you much but at least i am trying if by luck i could trace my maternal relations.
My mother Babara was born in the town of Kotagala in the Nuwara Eliya District on the 13th November 1927. She also says that her mother Evelyn Cooke had a sister called Rose Foks. My grand ma had worked in the Madras civil hospital till she got married in 1926 as the matron in charge.
