Fonceca as I see, is just a British way to write the (clearly defined) Portuguese surname Fonseca. Fonseca as well is a (composed) place surname, (Fonte + seca) or in archaic Portuguese form: Font'seca. Fonte in Portuguese means Fountain, and, Seca means Draught (by the season). Early time this surname was held, by descents to Garcia Rodrigues whom had granted land at Honra da Font'seca, Portugal. (Antenor Nascentes,II,116). The Coat of Arms to Fonseca is the same as granted to Coutinho and Tavares families because they all have the same origin. (Anuario Genealogico Latino,I,44;SB,II,70). Antonio C Weston.

The name could also have been derived from FONSCECA, and somewhere along the way the "S" was omitted, making it FONCECA. A search of passenger lists of European (English, Portuguese or Spanish) ships sailing to India in the 17-1800's will be required to trace the origin.
