I am helping a relative research his Anglo-Indian ancestry.  His grandfather was John Augustus MENDIES born 1855 in Agra, a Baptist who worked in the Civil Service in Allahabad and married, possibly as his a second wife, Rosamund Louisa SCOTT (b abt 1870 daughter of Osmund E Scott and Louisa Oehme or Ochme who married in Bengal in 1868.). Great grandfather was Louis (or Lewis) Augustus MENDIES born 1824 who married firstly a widow Louisa Eliza PINTO aged 20 in Calcutta and secondly Bridget HARRINGTON who was born in 1830.   Great great grandfather was John MENDIES (1775-1863) of Serampore and Calcutta who was the author of a companion to Johnsons Dictionary in English and Bengali which was printed on the Baptist Mission   Press Calcutta.  Another son of John MENDIES was Edward Benjamin MENDIES born 1822 who married at least twice and seems to have left descendants in the Calcutta, area many of whom appear to have been Roman Catholic

I have always presumed that the family were originally Portugese but have recently discovered the record of a burial in 1686, in the Dutch Cemetary Publicat Chingleput, of a Louys Mendis.

Rosamund Louisa MENDIES nee Scott's mother was a German lady called Louisa Marianne Ohme born circa 1850.

Also does anyone know if there was a particular Smallpox epidemic in Serampore in 1832 when 4 Mendies children all died within 2 weeks of each other?

Any help would be much appreciated.
