George Charles DESMIER b. 16 Jun 1840 d. 15 Jun 1920 Poona, India, married Sarah Angelina ETRIDGE on 19 May 1860 Hyderabad, Sind  b. 15 Jan 1840 Tanjore, India d. 21 Feb 1905 Poona, India. George Charles was remembered well by his g/daus.Sibyl and Laura as he retired  to live with their mother Esther in Poona and they were still in their 20's  when he died. It seems he was quite a character, very fond of the ladies and used to ride around Poona on a tricycle with an Indian boy following to push him up the steeper bits. When ladies came into view he used to sharply tell the boy to let go so that he would appear to be cycling proudly uphill on his own. Sybil and Laura also remember that he had a hand that had been injured slightly from a gunshot wound whilst out hunting. Laura remembers that he obtained a medal following the mutiny of 1857. He was a good horseman and rifleman. He was a farmer type who owned land and animals. He had many jobs during his lifetime. The following was researched by Robert Gibbs (547):  In the 1868 list of un covenanted civil servants (IOR L/F/10/143) George is included in the return from the Sind  Left Bank District Settlement Department as English Clerk earning a salary of 110/-. In the return of 1870-76 (L/F/10/144) he is mentioned as a Jailer earning a salary of 100/-. In the period 1877-1884 his salary was 180/-. In the 1891 list (L/F/10/147) for Surat Jail he is described as a Jailer earning a salary of 150/- and  having been born in India. According to Thackers Directory George was a jailer at Hyderabad Sind from  1884-1891 and Jailer at Surat 1893-1898. It seems as though he moved to Surat during 1891 it is unclear however why there was an apparent drop in salary although this may be have been made up by other allowances not recorded. Occupation: 1861 clerk in the Collectors Office,1863 clerk Settlement Office He was eventually Governor of jails in Hyderabad and Surat. George was confirmed by Rev. JC Marchetti on 2/11/1831. Joe remembers Mable as intelligent, lively, imaginative, educated, refined, very brave and utterly self reliant. She was a true pioneering type who was more happy out in the bush than in an urban environment, she preferred a hurricane lamp to electric lights. At one place they lived in in the North Deccan she was the only white person when husband Joseph was away at work. She kept a gun and used to shoot at hawks that attacked her chickens so that the word would get around to the local dacoits that she was a lady who knew how to use a gun. During the First World War when her husband was stationed in Africa she always  slept with a revolver under her pillow. When they lived in Ahmednagar there  was a German internment camp close by the home. One night she ws writing a letter, it was late and dark outside and she heard a rustle. She called out "Kaun hai?" (who is it?) and the reply was "sshhh!" So knowing that no Indian  would say sshhh she said "Come in to the light where I can see you". It was a  German internee who had escaped and wanted to visit his daughter who, he had heard, was very ill in a women's camp some distance away. He was after money and food for the journey and as he had seen her from the camp with her children he knew that she would understand. The next morning when the soldiers  said that someone had escaped she said nothing. She heard later that he had been caught as they knew where he was headed.  Mable's hobbies were cooking and gardening, she used to make all the pickles  and chutneys for the family.  Joe remembers that Mable had three other daughters: one knicknamed Chucha died  of meningitis shortly after her 1st birthday, the other two were either stillborn or died shortly after birth.   Sponsors for Mable were Edwin  and Lisa Desmier. Mable Maud Desmier b. 22 April 1876 Kotri, Sind d. 1948 Bombay   married  Joseph Samuel KIRBY on  29 Jan 1900 Hyderabad, Sind  b. 17 July 1876 d. August 1943 Jallunder, India.  Mable looked after Joe von Ruhland after his mother and father had died. Sponsors for Mable were Edwin  and Lisa Desmier. children:

Married (2nd marriage) to Edith Anne EARLE (b. 26 Nov 1876 d. cir1950 Calcutta India) on 9 Jun 1909 St John the Evangelist, Sealdah,Calcutta    They later moved to Bangalore where he was  the engineer in charge of the Loco shed. The Loco shed was where they repaired and maintained the steam engines and the rolling stock. He was  transferred to Arsikere and while there he bought a plantation at Bokasagara, Kadur. When the cholera plague hit Arsikere the family lived in 2 railway  carriages for about 6 months to isolate themselves from the disease. On the  plantation they grew oranges amongst other things. From Arkisere the family moved back to Bangalore then Gooty and Pakala living for about 4 years in each place. In Gooty and Pakala he had his own railway carriage to take him  wherever he needed to go. He was a strong, tall and heavy man who once pulled a railway carriage along  with a rope. He is said to have nearly killed an Indian once when he referred  to his wife as a woman instead of a lady. William and Edith went to England in September 1938 but they didn't like the cold weather and having to do without servants so they returned to India in March 1939. Terence Earle Desmier b. 1 Jan 1916 New Delhi, India d. 8 August 2001 St Andrews Hospital Adelaide South Australia  married Alma May PIPER on 27 Jan 1941 Marylebone, London, UK ( b. 26 Jan 1917 Marylebone, London, UK d. 29 May 1992 Hurstpierpoint, West Sussex, UK) .  Terry was born in India and had a good childhood living in several different locations as his father was an Engineer who changed his job frequently working with different railway companies and the Public Works department. He used to frequently tell stories about his childhood. About Buckoo the pet deer that they eventually gave to the Zoo in Bangalore. About going tiger shooting when he was eight years old with his father because the tiger was frightening the villagers. About how he was the school champion swimmer winning all the events and they commissioned a special trophy for him. About how he once saved a man from drowning in a dam by diving in to rescue him. Terry left India in August 1934 at the age of 18. He went to England to study as a ship's Wireless Operator. He passed his exams for a position with Marconi in December 1935. marconi was the company that at the time supplied operators to the shipping lines. As there was a waiting list of about 6 to 9 months for positions on ships he then went to do further study at the british radio Engineering College. He worked for several radio companies the last of which was with the Boosey & Hawkes Hammond Organ Company who he was with for about 2 years.  He joined the RAF the day that war was declared. He went to their college at Colwyn Bay in Wales and then Clapham in London. He was stationed as a corporal (wireless operator) at Hendon, London (Googe St.), Leighton (Bedfordshire), Whitehall, Cardington and Cranwell. He continued with this type of work after the war working for Cable & Wireless later to become British Telecom.  His hobby and interest was farming and he had a hobby farm of 40 acres in Burgess Hill in Sussex for many years where he reared beef cattle and reared and kept laying poultry and fattened turkeys for the christmas market.    In Hurstpierpoint, sussex  where he retired to he has an allottment where he grew all his own fruit and vegetables.   He was devoted to Alma who was crippled with Arthritis and retired from his work in London to care for her.  After Alma died he emigrated to Australia to live with his son Richard (Rick) and daughter in law carole in Angle Vale. He built a new house across the road from Rick and Carole choosing all the brick work and furnishings himself. He was very independent baking his own biscuits and other things.  Carole had to ask him to stop bringing his biscuits across as the girls were eating too many of them.  It wasn't long before he had a garden established and many people made comments about how good the front garden looked with all the flowers, he seemed to have a natural touch in getting things to grow.    He brought Alma'a ashes with him to Australia and they were buried in the Angle vale cemetery. He used to visit her grave each wednesday taking flowers collected from his garden.    He always put others before himself and never lost his temper.   In 2001 after his 85th birthday he started to get more breathless and was finding it tiring to just walk across the road. For some reason he sustained a stress fracture in his left leg which at first they thought was associated with the spread of prostate cancer to his bones. He had an operation to replace the top of his femur which was successful and he was recovering well but complications set in and he died from these two weeks after the operation. children

Percy and Winifred met during the latter half of World War II near Moulmein, Burma. Percy was at the time a Sergeant in the security division of the army and, with other soldiers, he used to escort the European families of the area to and from mass on Sundays to ensure their safety. After Mass Winfired's mother used to invite the boys in for a meal and a drink and so they all got to know each other quite well. A year later toward the end of the war the Japanese surrendered only 48 miles distant from their town of Amherst. The friendship between Percy and Winifred's family developed further in these easier times as Percy was in charge of the Cinema shows that the army organised. He would regularly drive over to pick them all up to see the films. When the war ended and the troops were due to return back to India Percy approached Winifred's father and asked for her hand. When the British left India Percy transferred to the Indian Armed Forces. Following a course at Poona he passed out as a 2nd Lieutenant and joined the signal corps. Some of the places that he was stationed at included Calcutta, Delhi, Meerut, Jullandar, Ferozepore, Mathura, Ranchi (where their daughter Dorothy was born) Goa and finally Jabalpur. He retired as a Senior Major. After retiring they moved permanently to Tiruchirapalli where several others in the Desmier clan lived. Percy loved gardening and daily spent his time watering his plants. Roses were his favourites. He also devoted much time to helping the poor and needy by writing applications for them and in any other way that he was able. Percy is buried in his grandmothers grave.
