FONCECA's in Perth 1968

Our parents Cyril and Zena Fonceca with us 6 children (Brian, Russel, Leslie (Chuksu), Vernon, Gordon & Colette) arrived in Perth, Western Australia on 17th September 1968 aboard a QANTAS flight, having left our home in Pallavaram, Madras, India.

We boarded an Air-India flight to Singapore from Meenambakam airport on 15th September 1968, and after a night in a Singapore hotel on orchard road and a meeting with Baldwin Albert's family, we boarded a QANTAS flight to Perth along with the Pinto family who had arrived from Bombay.

The QANTAS flight into Perth in the early hours of a cold Perth morning was greeted with fumigation of the cabin by Australian officials and then stringent custom checks of all cabin baggage. Some months earlier, our family possessions had been shipped from Madras in 40 steel trunks, all carefully numbered and their contents listed with meticulous care.

We were met at Perth airport by Ken Bird who drove us new migrants through the empty streets of Perth to our new temporary home in Australia, 48 London Street, Mt Hawthorn.

Those early days in Australia were spent in settling in to a new lifestyle. Through the help and guidance of our relatives Aunt Beryl and Uncle Trevor Fleming, and their 3 children, David, Joan and Mark, we were introduced to the Australian ways.

It was a continuation of school for Vernon, Gordon and Colette at Perth Modern School, while the others set about joining the workforce. While our Aunt Beryl Fleming showed Mum the shopping at Mt Hawthorn and helped fill the shopping trolley at "Tom the Cheap" grocers, jobs were found at the employment office for Dad at Diamond Foods, Brian at "Perth Fibre Box" in Osborne Park, Chuksu at Charlie Carters and Russel at "Bearing Service" on Gordon Street in Perth.

Settling into the London street home and getting into a routine way of life was easy with family and friends we met.

Memories of those early years include: Man on the moon, Vietnam War, Telethon, Lionel Rose becoming a world champ, Cisco Kid and other television series on Black & White TV, bottled milk delivered to your door, drive-in movies, service at petrol stations, meckering earthquake, Mexico Olympics, Polly Farmer and the Cardies, Hockey with Perth Old Modernians, outdoor dunnies...
